He is currently the only active Scottish NHA player and the first Scot to play for the NHA. Goldstrom is a favorite of the Montréal media, answering questions in his dry accent with witty quips. # Public history Goldstrom was signed to the San Francisco Blades' development team, the Death Valley Heat, after a walk-on tryout right before the 1999-00 NHA season was due to start. He was studying at Golden State University and had to play using borrowed gear. The Blades recognized his skating talent and signed him to an entry-level contract. Goldstrom dropped out of school to focus on his hockey career, encouraged by his mother. He signed to the Heat in 1999 alongside [[Hans Roxas|Hans Roxas]], who he then shared an apartment with. Goldstrom and Roxas also shared a San Francisco apartment for the 2002-03 season. Goldstrom was traded to the Montréal Wanderers after internal conflict with the Blades. He sustained minor injuries the night of the 2004 Le Forum Montréal Attack. In 2009, Goldstrom claimed to have dropped a sword, specifically a claymore, on his face, causing his trademark scar. It is unknown if this is true and he refuses to elaborate. During the 2014 NHA partial lockout, Goldstrom returned to Golden State University to finish his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Literature. The Wanderers voted Goldstrom as their team captain three seasons in a row, from 2011 to 2014. He has since then refused the title, but occasionally wears the A. --- > [!NOTE]- Private notes > His mother, Rikke Andersen-Goldstrom, represented Denmark in the 1979 World Cup of Ice Hockey and is currently a professor at Golden State University, teaching sports management (as Dr. Andersen or Rikke). His father, Joshua Goldstrom, was a photographer and blacksmith who died in 1996 in Aberdeen, due to an overdose. Jakey is deathly afraid of developing an addiction, doesn’t even drink coffee, and sometimes skips prescription painkillers because he is deeply suspicious of sports medicine. > The Blades traded him away after Hans’s injury because he refused to play, he is convinced he’s entirely responsible for ending their playing career, but it’s more nuanced than that. > He wears 79 for his mom, in honor of her win :) > While the UK does have a national team, he’s so disgusted at the idea of playing alongside the English that he’s refused to play for them. He postures that it’s because he hates all form of sports nationalism, but it’s mostly just a petty Scottish thing for him. > Herniated his L5-S1 disc during the 2013-2014 season and has suffered from chronic back pain since—hence why he refuses to accept the captaincy. The disc herniates again catastrophically in 2018, after the Blades-Wands disaster game. > Plays up his Scottish accent for the cameras and media. His regular speaking accent is quite faded/blended with a standard North American accent, since he’s been living in NA since 1996. > Views it as his ancestral duty to annoy Swedish people. He has a bickering friendship with Matti, but they’re not besties. > Never even suspected Akari was his daughter, because he’s stupid and just assumed she was Dougie’s or it was like a Mamma Mia situation—Hans *was* promiscuous back then. > *the team trauma.*, the novel, is entirely through his perspective. Writing about his loved ones to understand them is his maladaptive coping mechanism. His BFA capstone is also titled *THE TEAM TRAUMA*, which was an experimental anthology/collage of his injury plus his grief around Biel and Hans. Best part is that he stole the title *The Team Trauma* from Hans’s Players’ Tribune article. > Took summer classes and online classes at GSU starting in 2010 to try and finish his BFA degree, after finding out Hans was alive. > Got some gender shit going on. He dislikes being big and tall, and envies his trans loved ones. He thinks he’s reaching for a trans identity to excuse himself from his “sins”—he feels he doesn’t deserve any joy in general ## Design - Jakey's facial scars runs from about half an inch before his hairline, skipping above his right eye, to just under his jaw. - The gray streak in his hair starts right above his scar, due to a small vitiligo patch. - His beard grows in lighter relative to his head hair. - Jakey has a lot of body hair. - He did get enough sleep. His eyes are just like that. ## Personality | **+** | **=** | **-** | | :---------: | :--------: | :--------: | | sympathetic | impulsive | possessive | | dedicated | emotional | remorseful | | hopeful | protective | naive | Jakey has always struggled with the fact that suffering is not noble, that things don’t always happen for a reason and that justice doesn’t always prevail. He is fiercely protective of his loved ones, often going out of his way to do favors—whether they like it or not. At the same time, he’s somewhat embarrassed that he cares so much, so he hides behind a veneer of sarcasm, chirps, and pseudo-intellectualism. His fierce optimism has made him a natural leader of the Wanderers, serving as captain from 2011-2014. ## Trivia - Jakey lived with Biel Sheppard and Charlie Belrose, Angel's moms, for a year after being traded to Montréal. - In turn, Jakey took Angel under his wing when Angel was drafted to the Wanderers. - As a teenager to a single mom, Jakey often paid for his own hockey expenses by working for the local rink. - His larger vitiligo patches did not start becoming prominent until he turned 30 (most notably, the patch on his forehead that makes his hair white/gray) - He is red-green colorblind. To avoid fashion blunders, he sticks to a blue-gray palette. Zhenya helps him pick pieces to buy, but that doesn’t always save him from dressing ridiculously - Despite playing in Death Valley (Las Vegas) for three years, Jakey has a very low tolerance for hot weather and sweats a lot. Gross, dude - He likes to cite critical theory, but has typically never actually read the actual work—he’s a SparkNotes and Tumblr academic. He will never admit this out loud. ## Likes - Breads and pastries - Chirping - Absurd humor - Cacti and succulents - 90s R&B and hip-hop ## Dislikes - Bright lights and neon - Confrontation - Being genuine and vulnerable - Saying goodbye - Coffee ## Relationships > [!kith|family] **[[Angel Sheppard|Angel Sheppard]]** _Friend / Chosen family_ > “Angie is great.
